Impact of Ten Years Conservation Tillage in Organic Farming on Soil Physical Properties in a Loess Soil—Northern Hesse, Germany

نویسندگان

چکیده

In conservation agriculture, tillage potentially influences the physical, chemical, and biological quality of soil. Although effects agriculture on soil’s physical properties have been studied in conventional management systems, studies organic farming especially concerning long-term changes, are scarce. This study summarizes results mechanical soil parameters obtained over initial 10 years different treatments (plowing versus reduced with without compost application) an field trial conducted central Germany. Moreover, as a research objective, measures were evaluated. Differences during mainly detected topsoil. At depth 0.10–0.24 m, total porosity air capacity lower, bulk density was higher reduced-tillage compared to those plowed treatments. Additionally, stability (precompression stress) at 0.10 m for systems combined application. addition, aggregate enhanced (higher mean weight diameter, determined via wet sieving). Overall, did not exceed critical values soil, nor affect functionality (saturated hydraulic conductivity), thereby demonstrating its feasibility sustainable technique farming. Future should include ameliorate compaction zones treatments, e.g., by applying subsoiling techniques combination deep-rooting crops prevent limited rooting space resulting from high impedance, under dry conditions.

Guest Editorial: Conservation Tillage for Organic Farming

There is interest in reducing or even eliminating tillage in organic production systems. In this special Issue, research teams in Europe and North America summarize recent and on-going efforts to develop conservation-tillage systems that can be used on commercial organic farms. While progress is being made in the development of organic no-tillage (no-till) systems, considerable work still needs...

Strategies for soil conservation in no-tillage and organic farming systems

John R. Teasdale is a plant physiologist at the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory, USDA Agricultural Research Service, Beltsville, Maryland. N o-tillage cropping systems are known to provide many benefits to soils that can enhance production of grain crops. Many of the improvements to soils that result from no-tillage production such as increases in soil aggregation, water-holding cap...

Soil Physical Properties Due to Different Tillage Systems in Dryland Regions of Northwestern Iran

Lack of sufficient information on conservation tillage systems leads to the dominating use of conventional tillage practice in most parts of Iran. Testing other management practices may help in decision making regarding the types of tillage systems that reduce soil deterioration. A three- years field experiment was conducted to study the effects of conventional (CT), reduced (RT) and no-till (N...

Reduced Tillage and No-Till in Organic Farming Systems, Germany—Status Quo, Potentials and Challenges

Only 34% of all German farms apply reduced tillage (RT), while approximately 1% of the arable land is under no-tillage (NT). Statistics for organic farming are not available, but the percentages are probably even lower. The development of German organic RT and NT has been strongly driven by pioneer farmers for 40 years, and supported by field trials since the 1990s. The main motive for conversi...
